How the US Highway 136 Solar Project is Transforming Fulton County
The Past Meets the Future
Presenting career opportunities in clean energy and archaeology to an attentive student audience in the VIT Community Unit School District #2 gymnasium.
Developing renewable energy is about more than putting power on the grid. It is about building a better future for the people who live nearby. At Lightstar, our mission focuses on community-first development. The new US Highway 136 Solar Project perfectly captures this commitment.
We designed this 2.75MWAC solar array to deliver tangible benefits to Fulton County. From generating reliable power to engaging local students, this project is making a lasting impact on the region.
Powering the Grid and the Local Economy
Generating reliable Fulton County solar energy brings major advantages to the area. First, the facility supplies clean power directly to the local distribution grid. The energy we produce here stays here, which reduces our shared reliance on fossil fuels.
Beyond environmental benefits, the project strengthens the local economy. Constructing and operating the solar farm creates new local jobs. Furthermore, the facility generates consistent tax revenue for the county. This funding supports essential community services and infrastructure, making Lewistown clean energy a win for everyone.
Engaging the Next Generation of Innovators
During our early site planning, our team discovered prehistoric artifacts on the property. These items were carefully cataloged to preserve local history. We also used this exciting discovery as a chance to connect with local students.
Recently, a team visited the VIT Community Unit School District #2 to talk about environmental science and historical preservation. During an elementary school assembly, our field expert Amanda brought a hands-on archaeological "dig kit" for show and tell. We asked the young students to imagine what people 100 years from now might learn about them based on the items they leave behind. They shared fun, personal ideas like stuffed animals, favorite clothes, and gaming systems.
Later that day, we met with junior high and high school students to discuss green career pathways. Amanda led a great Q&A session about her background in environmental site evaluation. The students stayed highly engaged and asked wonderful questions about the renewable energy industry.
Dedicated to Community Stewardship
A project of this scale requires dedicated leadership. Senior Development Manager Kyle McAdam spearheads the US Highway 136 initiative. He works hard to ensure we uphold our mission of community stewardship at every step.
“We believe that clean energy development must work hand-in-hand with the local community,” says McAdam. “By protecting the land and engaging with incredible students right here in Fulton County, we ensure this project leaves a positive, lasting mark on the region for decades to come.”
Save with Illinois Community Solar
The CRGA also reinforces the state's primary mechanism for driving renewable energy growth: the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). The bill makes a crucial adjustment by allowing the RPS budget to increase with inflation.
You can benefit directly from the clean power generated in your area - You get to lower your monthly utility bills without ever installing solar panels on your roof.
